Mary Kay (Archer) Montovino ’73 brings depth of experience to her role

Mary Kay (Archer) Montovino ’73 has had many roles within the school district—student, alumna, parent, staff member, and volunteer. Now she’s bringing her knowledge of and love for SCASD to her role as Education Foundation president.

A lifelong resident of State College, Mary Kay attended SCASD K-12 and was involved with cheerleading, field hockey, gymnastics, track and field, and student government. Her husband Angelo Montovino is class of ’67. Her son, Stephen M. Brame ’92, PSU Class of 1996, is President/CEO of Pennsylvania Rural Electric Association & Allegheny Electric Cooperative, Inc., and daughter Christina M. Montovino, SCHS ’00 is Regional Vice President of Operations for Happy in the Valley overseeing five Jersey Mike’s locations in Lancaster, Lebanon and York Counties.

Mary Kay also worked for SCASD as a secretary in the main office of the high school, at Radio Park and Mount Nittany Middle School, and in other offices around the district and served as the first President of the State College Educational Support Personnel Association (SCESPA). When she retired in 2017, she was Executive Secretary to the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education. She continues to substitute, mainly in the administrative center.

A board member since 2017, Mary Kay has served the Education Foundation as secretary, vice president, and now as president.

“I have always had an interest in education and as a child, wanted to “grow up and be a teacher.” I attended Penn State University for a year and then attended and graduated from South Hills Business School. My 40+ year career was spent working in education at SCASD as well as a few years at Penn State. Having worked in many different schools and departments, I acquired knowledge of district operations. My career goal was to learn and contribute to educating our students every day,” Mary Kay said.

“When I retired in June of 2017, I decided to ease my way into retirement by substituting when needed! I wanted to continue to make a difference and share what I gained as a student and staff member in SCASD,” she continued. “Serving on the board of the Education Foundation is a perfect way to stay involved in education, a way to give back to our wonderful community.”

In addition to her work with the Education Foundation, Mary Kay is busy planning the class of 1973 50th reunion.

Impressive article about you and your credentials. You’ll do a fantastic job!

  3. Great precedent to set! This kind of deep-seated, experience-based familiarity with the school district’s needs and potentials is indispensable to optimizing the effectiveness of the Foundation’s grants and activities!!! Hopefully, the first dedicated district staff to come into this position, from which the school district students and staff only stand to gain!
